Stratford, Ontario Overview
The city of Stratford is a beautiful small city with a population just over 31,000 according to the 2016 census. Located in the seat of Perth County, Stratford is at the center of Southwestern Ontario. Founded in 1832, Stratford was named after its sister city in Britain, Stratford-upon-Avon, thanks to its picturesque setting surrounding the Avon River. Once the hub of Canadian furniture making, this town soon changed direction and has become one of Ontario’s top tourist destinations. Thanks to the world famous Stratford Shakespearean Festival Theatre, since 1953, tourists from all over the world have travelled to experience the glory of live theatre produced by renowned actors and directors alike. Along with well over a hundred savoury restaurants, a unique assortment of specialty shops, and over 175 acres of gorgeous green space, it is no wonder why so many truly adore this city.
Stratford is a small, but growing city thanks to its natural beauty, idyllic charm, and numerable industries. Tourism, hospitality, agriculture, and manufacturing dominate the city’s industrial scene.
Stratford’s homes vary from condos, townhouses, bungalows, and classic homes to million dollar mansions; ranging from heritage to contemporary in style and design. The city’s immense natural beauty is evenly balanced by its convenience and distinctiveness.
Two school boards dominate the education scene in Stratford – the Avon Maitland District School Board overseeing nine elementary schools and one high school, and the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board administration running four elementary schools and one high school. There are two private schools in the city, one elementary and one secondary school. For post-secondary pursuits, both the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College have campuses in town. The prestigious Stratford Chefs School has been churning out culinary entrepreneurs since 1983.
With so much to see and do, be it dining in any of the city’s abundant mouth watering restaurants, shopping in the chic and sophisticated mix of boutiques and galleries, taking in a live play at one of the Stratford Festival’s venues, or strolling along the banks of the beautiful Avon River, the city’s alluring ambience and experience can be expressed simply as ‘only in Stratford!’
